We designed a contemporary family home to replace a poorly extended 1970s detached property on a complex sloping site in Claygate. The clients wanted an imaginative design that made the most of the slope.
What did we do?
As a starting point, we listened to the client’s needs to find out how they used the current house on a daily basis, and what did and didn’t work. Then we considered how to solve the design problems presented by the sloping plot.
The previous 1970s house hovered high above the garden, and as a result was very separated from it. So we came up with a new design that nestles into the site instead, and when viewed from the road, the house appears modern but unassuming.
As you move through the new house to the rear, the elegant design is unveiled – a double height vaulted family room is now level with the garden, and is complimented by the kitchen to the right.
What challenges did we need to overcome?
The site had few external planning restrictions, but the difficult sloping site imposed its own challenges. We also needed to find a way to design a significantly larger property than the previous house; one that didn’t impact its neighbours when seen from the street.
What did the client think of the way we worked?
The client valued our exciting, contemporary design, and ability to flex scale and materials to meet their budget. They also liked how we used 3D modelling and virtual reality to help them understand the flow of the finished space. They loved that our design was flexible in size and materials, allowing it to be scaled to fit the budget available.
They also enjoyed the challenge of the process, and how we focused on what really mattered, and used 3D during the design stage to resolve the issues with the sloping site, where the challenging topography could have had a massive impact on final cost if not exploited correctly.
