Designing a Home Gym in 2024.

PILATES STUDIO

Designing a home gym aims to establish a space which seamlessly combines aesthetics with practicality. The setting is intended to boost general well-being and enable you to adopt a healthy lifestyle on your own terms.

As specialists in high-end gym projects for clients, we’ve led commissions across Oxfordshire, London and the Cotswolds. Our expertise ranges from crafting versatile workout spaces to designing yoga studios bathed in natural light, connecting to spa facilities and swimming pools.

As we embark on the journey of designing for well-being in 2024, we have drawn together our insights from our projects and the leading trends on what to consider when looking to create your own bespoke exercise space.

What Purpose Do You Envision for the Gym Space?

When contemplating the design of your gym space, consider whether you aim for a functional environment optimised for intense workouts, where equipment layout and accessibility are prioritised for efficiency. On the other hand, if your preference leans towards a more serene environment, you might opt for a calming oasis of tranquility. This entails focusing on design elements that promote relaxation, such as soothing colour schemes, comfortable furnishings, and ample natural light.

Take into account your specific fitness goals and personal preferences. If your workouts involve high-intensity training and a variety of equipment, a functional layout with sufficient space might be crucial. Alternatively, if your fitness routine emphasises mindfulness and a holistic approach, creating a space that fosters a sense of calm and well-being may be more in line with your aspirations.

Ultimately, tailoring the atmosphere and functionality of your gym space to align with your unique fitness journey ensures a more personalised and motivating environment.

Unique Design Features.

Consider the distinctive design features that will enhance your workout experience. Reflect on whether you desire expansive windows to provide great views of the outside inviting ample natural light – the incorporation of large windows not only connects you with the outdoors but can contribute to a more refreshing and invigorating exercise space.

Contemplate the use of mirror walls. Mirrors can serve both aesthetic and practical purposes. They not only contribute to the visual appeal of the space but also provide functional benefits by aiding correction during workouts. Strategic placement of mirrors can create a sense of spaciousness and give a well-organised and visually engaging gym environment.

Our approach involves creating versatile spaces with cleverly integrated lighting and sound systems, easily adaptable to various functions at the press of a button. This flexibility allows for the transformation of the gym into a dynamic, music-filled environment for one session and a serene relaxation space for yoga and meditation in the next.

Consider these design features as opportunities to customise your home gym according to your unique preferences and needs. By carefully selecting elements like windows, mirrors, lighting and audio-visual components, you can create a personalised and inspiring fitness haven that aligns with your lifestyle and fitness goals.

Flooring & Materials.

When choosing materials for each element of the room, there are many options. A good starting place is to understand what you will be using the space for before selecting accordingly.

Incorporating softer, natural materials such as timber and leather alongside durable options like polished concrete and rubber not only withstands wear and tear but also ensures surfaces are easily maintainable with a simple wipe down.

Material choices should also be reflective of the mood and acoustics that the project is aiming to achieve. In each case, our interior designers work with our clients to create a bespoke solution that takes each of these factors in hand.

Endless pools, Jacuzzis and Hot Tubs.

An increasing number of clients express a desire to integrate pools, saunas, and spas into their homes, with a rising trend of situating these amenities outdoors due to advancements in water technologies requiring less space. We have included a range of endless pools, resistant and current spa pools, hot-tubs and jacuzzis within a garden design, as well as within interior home spas and converted outbuildings. Depending on the desired usage, our designers work with our clients to consider the latest models and what’s going to have optimal (and enjoyable!) use for our clients’ lifestyles and budget.
