The Art of Belgian Farmhouse Interiors
Belgian farmhouse interiors are renowned for their harmonious blend of rustic charm and refined elegance. This design philosophy celebrates the beauty of natural materials, craftsmanship, and a serene, neutral palette. At HollandGreen, we’ve brought this aesthetic to life in several projects and we’re sharing the key elements to consider…

Architectural Simplicity with Historical Resonance
The Belgian Farmhouse aesthetic often features architectural elements that reflect a deep respect for history and craftsmanship. Stepped gables, a distinctive feature in Flemish architecture, are commonly found in these structures. These gables not only add visual interest but also serve as a testament to the region’s rich architectural heritage.
Traditional Belgian farmhouses often feature open-plan layouts centered around a large hearth, serving as the heart of the home. This design fosters a sense of community and warmth. In our projects, such as Larks Barn, we placed the kitchen at the very heart of the home, creating a central gathering space that connects seamlessly with dining and living areas. This thoughtful layout fosters a sense of togetherness while maintaining the elegance and functionality expected of a modern country home.

Emphasis on Natural Materials
The Belgian design ethos places a strong emphasis on natural materials, which are celebrated for their authenticity and timeless appeal. Reclaimed wood, stone, and linen are staples in Belgian interiors, each chosen for their inherent beauty and character. These materials are often left in their raw or weathered states, showcasing their patina and history.
In our own projects we prioritise the use of such materials to create spaces that are both elegant and enduring. At Larks Barn, the kitchen is framed by dramatic, cathedral-like ceilings with exposed reclaimed timber beams that celebrate the building’s heritage. These historic elements are paired with refined contemporary touches — from unlacquered brass taps to bespoke cabinetry finishes in bronze — creating a striking balance between old and new.

Neutral Colour Palettes and Layered Textures
A hallmark of Belgian farmhouse interiors is the use of warm, nature-inspired colour palettes. Soft greys, taupes, and warm whites create a calming atmosphere, allowing the textures and materials within the space to take centre stage. This approach not only enhances the sense of space but also imbues the interiors with a timeless quality.
Texture is a fundamental element in Belgian interiors, adding depth and warmth to the space. The Belgian design ethos places a strong emphasis on natural materials, which are celebrated for their authenticity and timeless appeal. Reclaimed wood, stone, and linen are staples, each chosen for their inherent beauty and character.

Understated Elegance in Furnishings
In Belgian interiors, furniture is selected for its simplicity and craftsmanship. Pieces are often oversized and upholstered in natural fabrics like linen, offering both comfort and style. The focus is on quality and longevity, with each piece contributing to the overall harmony of the space. This approach ensures that the interiors remain uncluttered and serene yet inviting.
At Rowfield House, we curated a palette of bespoke pieces to create a cohesive and inviting living space. A handcrafted live-edge dining table, finished in a deep, rich tone, provides a striking contrast to the light oak flooring, anchoring the room with warmth and character. In the principal bedroom, rustic touches were thoughtfully introduced to echo the charm of the older part of the house, seamlessly blending the heritage of the property with its contemporary extension.

Maximising Natural Light
Belgian design places a high value on natural light, with large windows and open spaces allowing daylight to flood the interiors. This not only enhances the sense of space but also highlights the textures and materials within the home.
We always prioritise the incorporation of natural light in our projects to create warm and welcoming spaces. In our project Old Barn, we’ve designed large, strategically placed windows to flood the interiors with natural light, enhancing the ambience and creating a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

Harmonising Old and New
A hallmark of Belgian farmhouse design is the effortless blend of old and new — a balance we embrace in our work by pairing original architectural details with contemporary furnishings and finishes, resulting in spaces that feel both timeless and inviting.
Designing a Belgian farmhouse is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about creating a space that feels authentic, comfortable, and timeless.
