Our Design Philosophy

Our Design Philosophy

Our design philosophy is simple: to create spaces that are emotive, thoughtful and timeless.

We don’t have a house style; each of our projects is unique, inspired by its context, your story and your vision.

Responsible Design

We design homes to be enjoyed for generations. This means designing ethically and sustainably is at the heart of our approach – with a focus on creating regenerative, energy-efficient homes and thoughtful, biodiverse gardens.

Whether designing a new-build property or undertaking a sensitive heritage renovation, we apply a ‘Fabric First’ methodology and Passivhaus principles to reduce a home’s environmental impact and to leave a truly sustainable legacy.

Passivhaus Principles

Within our Architecture team, we strive to exceed regulatory energy efficiency requirements to minimise environmental impact and to create homes that offer enhanced comfort, improved health benefits and enduring value through long-term cost savings.

Informed by industry-leading guidance (LETI / UKNZCBS / RIBA 2030 / Passivhaus), our design approach integrates Passivhaus principles to help reduce the reliance on active heating and cooling systems.

We place thermal performance as a priority in our designs. This approach minimises unwanted heat loss, limits summer solar gains to prevent overheating, and ensures airtightness and effective ventilation – creating controlled and comfortable living environments.

Design For Wellbeing

Promoting a healthy indoor environment is a fundamental aspect of our sustainable design philosophy. We opt for non-toxic, low-emission and breathable materials to reduce invisible air pollutants and help regulate moisture.

Taking into account the sun’s path, our designs are also optimised for natural sleep regulation. Prioritising morning light in bedrooms and introducing circadian lighting for rooms enjoyed in the evenings are simple, natural choices that have a profound impact on everyday wellbeing.

A Fabric First Approach

We adopt a Fabric First approach to our designs, selecting low-carbon materials to reduce the embodied upfront carbon footprint of a building from the outset. Wherever possible, we prioritise natural materials and source locally to minimise transportation emissions. By designing the building envelope and surrounding landscape to the highest possible standard within the project brief and budget, we can minimise the future energy consumption of the home.

We also explore sustainable construction methods, including prefabrication and modular design, which can significantly reduce material waste and improve overall efficiency.

Renewable Living

Whilst sustainability is at the core of the design process, we also focus on ongoing operational energy efficiency by carefully selecting the best systems for your home. Using smart systems and sustainable technologies for heating, cooling, electricity and water ensures your home operates efficiently and cost-effectively.

Where appropriate, we incorporate on-site renewable technologies such as a photovoltaic array, air source heat pump or MVHR to further reduce reliance on external energy sources. Any surplus energy generated can be stored or sold back to the grid, enhancing the home’s overall performance and sustainability credentials.

Conscious Interior Design

We thoughtfully curate interior finishes that champion natural, enduring materials – chosen for their longevity, beauty, and minimal environmental impact. Wherever possible, we source locally and collaborate with skilled local suppliers and artisans to craft bespoke elements that bring authenticity and character to each home.

We are committed to reducing waste through the considered reuse of materials, finishes and furniture, and by selecting sustainable design solutions that enhance both the integrity and longevity of our interiors.

Lasting Landscapes

We place ecology and biodiversity at the heart of our Landscape Design, crafting outdoor spaces that not only complement the architecture of your property but actively enhance the natural ecosystem.

Through thoughtful planting schemes and the creation of habitats that support local wildlife, our designs foster long-term environmental resilience. Recognised with multiple awards for our commitment to biodiversity, we believe that every landscape should leave a positive and lasting legacy.

Principles Practised

We pride ourselves on practising the principles we advocate in our work. Our Studio operates on 100% renewable electricity and we adopt sustainable approaches wherever possible – from waterless printing of marketing materials to sustainable leasing of our equipment and technology.

We have a committed partnership with the charity Woodland Heritage, focusing on education and awareness around sustainable design. From the early stages of each project, we share their mission with our clients — helping them understand the value of responsible material sourcing and woodland management. Alongside this, our team supports Woodland Heritage through staff-led fundraising events, raising funds for their ongoing educational and reforestation work.
