Why The Garden Is The New Living Room

The boundaries of the home are changing. Where life was once lived firmly within four walls, the garden has become a primary living space – a vital setting for entertaining, relaxing, and family life.

We see this shift in our clients’ priorities. It is no longer about adding a patio as an afterthought, but about a more fundamental re-evaluation of how we live. The goal is to create a home where the lines between inside and out dissolve, and architecture and landscape are designed as one cohesive, intuitive whole.

Why We Design From The Inside Out

We believe a true connection to the landscape begins not in the garden, but with the architecture of the home itself. Our approach is to design buildings that naturally draw you outwards, making the garden an ever-present part of daily life.

This is achieved through thoughtful architectural decisions. Large-format sliding doors and level thresholds physically and visually erase the boundary, creating an effortless flow. The placement of every window and the design of each extension are carefully considered to frame beautiful garden vistas, turning the landscape into a living work of art that can be enjoyed from within, whatever the season.

This philosophy guided our work at Bishop’s Hall, a Grade II-listed estate in Oxfordshire. By thoughtfully removing overgrown planting, we opened new vistas that connected the historic home to its reimagined gardens. This created a clear, intuitive flow between the main house, its outbuildings, and new outdoor living spaces, including a refined pool and covered dining area – all crafted for modern living in harmony with the home’s historic character.

How We Create ‘Garden Rooms’ With Interior Detail

Once this physical connection is established, we design the outdoor zones with the same care and attention to detail as any room in your home. For our clients, the priorities are consistently functional living spaces, such as dedicated areas for outdoor dining and comfortable seating.

We approach these as genuine ‘garden rooms’, complete with tailored lighting, heating, and sound systems for year-round use. Terraces, pergolas, and covered seating areas are meticulously planned to consider flow, function, and atmosphere. Whether it’s finding the perfect sun-drenched spot for a morning coffee or designing a generous, sheltered setting for a large family gathering, every detail is considered to create an outdoor environment that is not only beautiful but perfectly suited to your lifestyle.

Our Longridge project is a refined example of this approach, designed as the ultimate destination for entertaining. At its heart is a fully equipped outdoor kitchen with a wood-fired pizza oven and a 12-seat bar. Adjacent, a minimalist pergola defines a relaxation space where an automated deck retracts to reveal a stunning 14-seater hot tub. Integrated heating and ambient lighting create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for evenings that last long after sunset.

By designing the house and garden in tandem, we create homes that feel expansive, connected, and entirely personal. It’s how we create places where life can be enjoyed without distinction, in a home that feels intuitive, cohesive, and completely aligned to you.
