HollandGreen Co-Founder Stephen Green’s renovation of his listed Georgian house is a personal project that blends sympathetic detailing with confident colour. The design uncovers and celebrates the property’s original architecture, resulting in a characterful home with a timeless sense of style.
In the kitchen, the vision was to create a modern and fresh space that honours the home’s Georgian character. The solution was to work with existing elements, retaining the original Welsh slate floor and the bright yellow Esse stove. A statement bespoke dresser was designed along the lines of a traditional apothecary, integrated with a modern take on Shaker-style cabinetry. Hand-painted in Farrow & Ball’s Emerald Green, the joinery gives a connection to the garden and a sense of fun against the cooker.
Finishing touches were chosen to bridge the gap between contemporary and traditional aesthetics. English bronze ironmongery by Corston and a Perrin & Rowe brass tap are in keeping with the character of the house. Below the Georgian window, a new built-in window seat provides storage and a place to relax, overlooking the flower garden.
A key challenge of the project was the property’s listed status, which meant no major structural alterations would receive planning consent. Stephen’s design approach was therefore not to reinvent the house, but to restore and give space to the architectural features that were already in place – including original fireplaces, mantels, cornices, windows, shutters, and a clawfoot bath.
This use of colour, refined joinery, and carefully selected fittings extends throughout the property. The approach creates a modern interpretation that brings a refined vibrancy and a sense of restfulness to each room.
