Designing For Every Generation: Multigenerational Homes That Grow With Family Life
At HollandGreen, more clients are looking at how design can bring generations together while maintaining independence and privacy. Multigenerational living is becoming a practical and considered way of life, focused on connection, flexibility and shared space.
Branwyn House: A Home Designed For Three Generations
Branwyn House in Berkshire is a contemporary, Japanese-inspired family home designed to bring three generations together under one roof. The client’s vision was for a calm, modern space where each family member could enjoy both independence and shared moments within one cohesive home.
Set on a sloping site with far-reaching views, the design carefully divides the home into distinct yet connected zones — private suites for grandparents and adult children, and generous shared areas for the whole family to gather. The open-plan living spaces flow around internal courtyards, creating a natural rhythm between connection and retreat.
Architecturally, the home blends simplicity and function — refined materials, natural light, and flowing layouts work together to support modern family life. Every design decision, from room placement to circulation, was shaped by the family’s need for balance between togetherness and privacy.
Rosewood Manor: Independent Living Close To Home
At Rosewood Manor, our team designed a new annexe to accommodate grandparents and a live-in housekeeper — a separate, self-contained dwelling within the same grounds as the main house.
Despite it being a new build, the annexe reflects the main property in its architectural language and detailing, creating visual harmony while offering full independence. With its own living, kitchen and sleeping areas, it allows older generations to live comfortably nearby, maintaining daily connection without dependence.
The Future Of Multigenerational Living
As family structures evolve, so does the way we design our homes. In 2025, nearly one in four UK households include multiple generations — a figure that continues to grow as people look for ways to stay close, share resources, and live more sustainably across life stages.
Through our integrated architectural, interior and landscape design services, we help clients create homes that adapt to life’s changes — from flexible layouts and accessible design to future-proofed family planning.
Multigenerational living isn’t just about space — it’s about designing homes that foster connection, independence and belonging for every generation.
