Gardens That Give Back

Summer invites us outdoors. It’s a season of long, light-filled evenings and warm afternoons that draw us into our gardens, encouraging us to slow down and reconnect with nature. But what if our outdoor spaces could do more than just provide a beautiful backdrop? What if they could actively enhance our wellbeing, support the planet, and become thriving ecosystems in their own right?

At HollandGreen, our design philosophy is centred on creating thoughtful outdoor spaces that are not only personal to you but are also designed to evolve and flourish for generations. This summer, we’re exploring how three core principles- wellbeing, sustainability, and biodiversity come together to create gardens that truly give back.

How To Design A Garden For Wellbeing

We believe the most successful gardens are those that make you feel something. Beyond the visual, a garden should be an immersive, sensory experience. The gentle sound of water, the fragrance of climbing roses on a warm evening, or the feeling of cool stone underfoot can create powerful moments of calm and restoration.

Our approach is to design with intent, curating spaces that cater to your lifestyle. This might be a sunken seating area surrounded by aromatic herbs for social gatherings, a private terrace positioned to catch the morning sun for a moment of reflection, or meandering pathways that encourage a mindful stroll. By understanding how you want to feel in your garden, we can design a personal sanctuary that serves as a genuine escape, improving your wellbeing every time you step outside.

Our work at Longridge is a testament to this philosophy. Designed as the ultimate garden retreat for entertaining, this versatile space combines sophisticated al fresco dining with a luxurious spa.

At its heart, a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen with a bespoke 12-seat bar provides the perfect setting for sociable gatherings. Adjacent, beneath a minimalist pergola, an innovative automated deck retracts to reveal a stunning 14-seater hot tub.

Thoughtfully designed for year-round enjoyment, the retreat is completed with integrated heating, ambient lighting and a sound system, creating an inviting atmosphere long after sunset.

Why A Lighter Touch Defines The Art Of Sustainable Garden Design

Designing ethically and sustainably is at the heart of our work. A responsible garden is not about compromise; it’s about making intelligent, informed choices that lead to a more resilient and rewarding space.

Sustainability in the garden can take many forms:

  • Water-wise Planting: Selecting beautiful plants that are suited to our changing climate reduces the need for excessive watering. Grouping plants with similar water needs creates efficient and thriving communities.
  • Local, Characterful Materials: Using locally sourced stone for pathways or reclaimed timber for pergolas not only minimises the carbon footprint of a project but also embeds the garden in its context, giving it a true sense of place.
  • Designing for Longevity: We create gardens that will grow with you. This means robust design, quality craftsmanship, and a planting plan that matures beautifully over time, reducing the need for constant intervention and replacement.

Why Biodiversity Is Central To Creating A Lasting Legacy

The idea of increasing the variety of life in our gardens can feel like a grand challenge, but it is often achieved through small, simple steps. Biodiversity Net Gain, or BNG, is simply about leaving the natural environment in a measurably better state than it was before. For a residential garden, this is a wonderful opportunity to create a richer, more dynamic space.

It could be as simple as planting a native hedge instead of building a fence, providing a vital corridor and food source for birds and insects. It might involve creating a wildflower meadow that attracts pollinators, designing a natural swimming pond that becomes a habitat for dragonflies, or layering planting to provide shelter for a wider range of wildlife.

By weaving these habitats into the fabric of the garden design, we can create a space that feels alive and connected to the wider landscape, a personal garden that plays a part in a much larger, more positive story.

A garden designed with wellbeing, sustainability, and biodiversity in mind becomes more than just an extension of your home. It becomes a dynamic, restorative, and responsible space that nurtures both you and the natural world. It’s a legacy of thoughtful design, created to be cherished for many generations to come.
