HollandGreen Co-Founder Ben Holland Talks to The Country House Department About Our Studio’s Unique Approach to Residential Design.

Here Ben Holland gives his insights into our Studio’s holistic design vision for homes and gardens, featured in The Country House Department’s recently published magazine.

When Ben Holland and Stephen Green founded the multi-award winning Architectural and Design Practice HollandGreen in 2010, they started a new approach to residential design. Firstly, they created a process where the early stages of a project get the time and focus needed to uncover a design vision, which is unique to each client. Secondly, they established a client experience where collaboration, discretion and supportive project management are at the heart of the design and build journeys.

“Investing this time at the beginning – how our clients live, interact, how they move through the spaces and what’s really important to them – this sets the project up for success and pays back dividends in beautifully detailed design, project milestones met and budget accuracy” Ben Holland, Partner HollandGreen

Over a decade on and interior designers and landscape designers sit alongside the architects, working in parallel in the same Studio and supported by dedicated project managers. It’s for this reason HollandGreen has forged a reputation as the leading multidisciplinary residential practice at the forefront of sustainable design.

Ben says: “Our design approach is driven by a passion to transform our clients’ homes into havens of beauty and functionality that are a true reflection of their identity, desires and values.  We consider the house and garden together from the start and how we can design as sustainably and ethically as possible, and we are known for this design collaboration between the architecture, interior design and landscape design in-house teams.”

He continues: ‘It’s a holistic process from the very start – from our first discussions with our client to discover the kernel of a concept which then goes on to inform everything, how all the spaces will work, flow and feel.  Nothing is lost in translation – it’s a coherent design journey.”

As a multidisciplinary design practice with a ‘one vision’ for each project using the latest sustainable design principles, Ben believes it’s this ethos that results in homes and gardens with a timeless quality, because the creative design process has considered the clients’ wishes, the building and its landscape together.

“With our clients often time-poor or overseas, we know how they appreciate having one dedicated partner across their project rather than the challenges that come with juggling multiple teams. As well as the benefits from a creative and integration perspective, it also saves time, administration, and gives our clients peace of mind and increased clarity.”
