Nature Inspired Floral & Fauna Interiors

In the design calendar, September is the month when showrooms and design houses present their new collections to architects and interior designers, and it’s also when the London Design Festival runs.  First launched in 2003 by co-founders Sir John Sorrell CBE and Ben Evans CBE, it celebrates and promotes London as the design capital of the world and gives a voice to the global design community.

Trends from London Design Festival 2020

Over the last few weeks a huge array of in-person and virtual talks took place across the spectrum of cutting-edge design – from showcases of particular designers to emerging designs in furniture, fabrics, fixtures and fittings. And this year there was even more of a focus on sustainability across the industry. Our interior designers were eager to take part and have been immersing themselves in the latest design collections.

One of the hottest new interior trends continuing into next season is design inspired by flowers, floral arrangements and fauna imprints. From fern silhouettes to delicate arrangements of flowers, bird motifs and striking petal patterns, these themes reflect a growing focus on sustainability and an eco-conscious sensibility with a desire to be connected to nature.

There are two distinct palette styles to the botanical theme. Firstly, more neutral, earthy shades with soft palettes of subtle tonal differences that create a calming, soothing ambience to any room.

Secondly and conversely at the other end of the spectrum, the designs take inspiration from the flower power of the 1970s, with exciting loud colours juxtaposed in bold patterns, giving rooms an instant injection of energy and personality against minimal styling across the rest of the room. In both interpretations, it is the beauty of nature that is captured, brought indoors and celebrated.

Rug Designer Amy Kent’s collaboration with Florist & Stylist Willow Crossley

Amy Kent’s stunning rugs are crafted by artisans in India and Nepal, and all are individually hand-made to customised sizes and colours. Last week at Focus/20, part of London Design Festival, Amy launched a new collaboration with renowned florist and author Willow Crossley.

Willow’s unique signature style encompasses a riot of colour, pattern, texture and movement.  She advocates a sustainable approach to floristry, and works within the rhythms of the seasons to celebrate the crop of each season’s blooms, sourcing locally grown stems wherever possible.  In her design collaboration with Amy Kent, the four rugs are named  ‘Autumn’, ‘Winter’, Spring’ and ‘Summer’.
