Bracken Fold, Oxfordshire

A Contemporary Countryside Home

Bracken Fold is a thoughtfully designed new-build family home located in the heart of the Oxfordshire countryside. Conceived as a contemporary retreat, the house responds directly to its rural setting through a carefully considered architectural language that balances bold, modern forms with a material palette rooted in the landscape. The design is tailored to family life, with a strong emphasis on sustainability, connection to nature, and long-reaching views.

The home is arranged across a tiered footprint, with a sunken lower level that integrates naturally into the sloping terrain, opening out to expansive views across the surrounding fields. Its architectural form is both sculptural and grounded, with a flint stone base anchoring the structure and upper levels clad in refined charred timber. A corten-lined entrance atrium creates a striking yet understated arrival point, referencing the earthy tones and textures of the local context. Internal living spaces are oriented to maximise light and outlook, while maintaining a quiet sense of privacy.

Sustainability and material integrity underpin the design. A zinc-clad roof incorporates solar panels on its southern pitch, while deep eaves and external timber fins provide passive solar shading. The green roof, seamlessly planted with native species, softens the visual impact of the home and enhances biodiversity.
