Great Missenden, Buckinghamshire.
What was the client’s brief?
The client had recently purchased a substantial 1980’s house on a sloping site, overlooking the lush countryside of Misbourne Valley, Buckinghamshire. Whilst the house was in good order and spacious it didn’t fully maximise the views across the valley and suffered from poorly thought-out extensions that compartmentalised the house. The clients dreamt of opening up the house to the countryside while introducing an open plan kitchen and living space where the family could come together. The rear garage was to be replaced with a family gym. They also wanted a garden room extension linked to the house. The alterations would make the house a perfect home for the family of four.
What did we do?
Just like our client, upon entering the house we fell in love with the stunning views of the valley stretching out behind the property. The potential for the house was clear and the client’s vision was exciting.
In order to meet the client’s brief and maximise the spectacular views, we designed a two-storey extension that opens up the rear of the house and maximises the views over the valley below. Externally, the two-storey extension is in keeping with the house and new French doors with Juliette balconies have been installed to the bedrooms, whilst the garden room extension has a more contemporary feel with aluminium and oak detailing.
What challenges did we need to overcome?
The design needed to take into consideration the local residents’ group design guide, which limited the materials that could be used and the type of windows to the front of the property.
The Construction process was delayed by the discovery of an unknown gas supply pipe. This held up progress whilst the Contractor and Client resolved the issue with the gas company.
What was the final result?
The open-plan kitchen dining space with large sliding doors opening up to the garden became the focal point of the house. Upon entering the front door, the eye is drawn towards the views to the rear and this leads the visitor through the entrance hall to a wide central staircase down to the living area. From here the view can be fully appreciated.
While the garden room extension provides a relaxing space, separate from the house and features bespoke timber trusses and large sliding doors to the garden.
