Beautiful historic country home restoration

Historic Mill House Renewal

Sensitively reimagined for modern family life, this restoration project brings a listed mill house gracefully into the present day while honouring the depth of its heritage. Working closely with our clients, we crafted a design that balances authenticity with contemporary comfort, using pared-back glazing, timber, and locally sourced brick and stone to create a harmonious dialogue between old and new.

In collaboration with the local conservation team, we introduced a finely detailed glazed extension that accommodates an open-plan kitchen and dining space. A slim glass link gently connects the new architecture with the original fabric of the home, preserving its long-held character across the refurbished study, entrance hall, wine room and boot room.

Given the property’s traditional single-skinned construction, breathable lime-based finishes were essential to maintain the building’s health and protect against damp. Throughout the interiors, specialist paint in soft, understated tones complements the restored beams, enhancing the mill’s inherent beauty. The result is a home rich in texture and history, thoughtfully adapted to offer refined, modern living for generations to come.

Historic Mill House Reimagined

This Grade II listed former mill house has been reworked to balance its historic structure with a clean, contemporary approach. Each room has its own identity, yet the spaces connect naturally and with purpose.

Specialist neutral finishes sit alongside the restored timber beams, creating a simple and respectful backdrop. In the kitchen and dining area, crisp white cabinetry and clear lines introduce a sense of order, while focused lighting above the copper-topped island emphasises the openness of the room.

Stronger colour is used in the adjoining utility spaces to define function and add depth. Deep blue cabinetry by Mark Taylor Design conceals storage in the boot room, while the exposed beams throughout the house maintain a consistent link to the building’s heritage. The result is a calm, well-structured evolution of the mill’s character.
