Sustainable class q barn conversion project bucks

Industrial Heritage, Reimagined

This Class Q permitted development transforms a former Dutch-style agricultural barn into a refined, light-filled family home, shaped by a clear commitment to long-term sustainability. The design retains the robust agricultural presence of the original structure while introducing a considered industrial language suited to contemporary rural living.

The architectural approach brings together folded-seam black aluminium cladding with a restrained palette of timber, concrete and steel-framed glazing. These materials work in balance, reinforcing the barn’s utilitarian origins while allowing expansive views across the surrounding countryside to define the internal experience. Generous areas of glazing and double-height spaces draw daylight deep into the plan, creating a strong sense of volume, openness and connection to landscape.

Following the grant of Class Q consent, the scheme was developed with a rigorous focus on performance as well as form. A high-efficiency building fabric, carefully detailed envelope and integrated low-energy systems support the clients’ ambition to minimise environmental impact. The result is a robust, durable home designed to achieve an A-rated energy performance, demonstrating how industrial character and sustainable design can be brought together with clarity and purpose.
