Lashlake House, Oxfordshire

The project’s primary challenge was adapting the historic layout for a contemporary lifestyle within the strict constraints of its Grade II* listing. Our solution was to establish a close partnership with Historic England and local conservation officers from the outset. This collaborative approach was essential in gaining consent for the considered interventions needed to make the home truly liveable.

A central part of this transformation was the thoughtful integration of modern amenities. We designed and introduced two entirely new bathrooms, bringing a level of comfort and convenience previously absent from the home. Crucially, we also created a larger, more functional kitchen, repositioning it as the sociable heart of the home. These new spaces were designed as contemporary insertions that sit respectfully within the historic fabric.

This modernisation was balanced with a deep respect for the building’s irreplaceable features. We painstakingly preserved the 300-year-old windows, original joinery, and historic plasterwork, ensuring these elements remained the defining character of the interior. Working with Louise Holt Interior Design and Barr Group, the renovation celebrates the building’s original craftsmanship, allowing its unique story to continue.
