Calm & Contemporary

Set within the grounds of Rosewood Manor in the Cotswolds, this Pilates Studio was designed as a serene and functional pavilion for our client’s personal practice and growing business. The architecture takes on a contemporary, minimalist aesthetic, while remaining sensitive to the historic character of the main house and its surrounding landscape.

The client required a calm, flexible space with abundant natural light, suitable for both private use and for filming online classes. A key architectural challenge was to design a contemporary building that felt harmonious within its traditional Cotswolds setting. Our solution was to ground the modern form with a palette of natural, local materials. A feature wall of Cotswold stone flows from the exterior into the studio, creating a strong visual connection to the main house and providing a textured backdrop for filming.

The design of the glazing was critical for creating the right atmosphere. To provide consistent natural light without the risk of overheating, we designed a dual-aspect solution. West-facing, full-height sliding glazed doors capture evening light and frame views across the paddocks, while high-level glazing on the other elevations ensures the studio feels bright and connected to nature throughout the day. A cantilevered roof overhang provides passive solar shading and creates a sheltered outdoor area for practice.

The studio is designed for flexible use, accommodating several reformer Pilates machines. To maintain a calm and uncluttered environment, practical storage is integrated at the entrance, with bespoke joinery keeping shoes, coats and equipment out of sight. A spa-style bathroom, finished in a specialist polished plaster and lit by a skylight, completes the retreat-like experience.

The result is a piece of contemporary architecture that is both functional and restorative, providing a calm, light-filled environment that sits in conversation with its historic surroundings.

A Serene Retreat

Set within the grounds of Rosewood Manor, this new-build Pilates studio was designed as a serene space for our client’s personal practice and growing business. The interior scheme embraces neutral tones and natural textures to create a contemporary, calming environment that sits harmoniously within its Cotswolds setting.

Warm timber flooring pairs with textured lime render on the walls, establishing a soft, welcoming atmosphere. Large arched mirrors amplify the light and sense of space, reflecting the surrounding countryside and enhancing the feeling of openness.

A key challenge was to create a backdrop for online classes. Our solution was a striking feature wall of natural Cotswold stone, which flows from the exterior into the studio and grounds the design in its setting.

The need for a calm, uncluttered environment had to be balanced with the practical requirements of a working studio. To resolve this, we designed bespoke joinery at the entrance, providing discreet, full-height storage for coats, shoes and equipment. This ensures the main studio remains a clean, minimalist space, free from distraction.

This attention to detail continues in the spa-style bathroom, designed to extend the retreat-like atmosphere. A skylight floods the space with light, while polished concrete surfaces are complemented by bronze fittings from Samuel Heath, adding a refined finish.
