Stone Farm, Cotswolds

Listed oxfordshire farmhouse extension

Confident Contrast

For this Grade II listed farmhouse, a striking glass-and-copper extension introduces a confident yet considered intervention. The new kitchen, dining and living space is defined by transparency and light, creating a clear architectural dialogue between the original stone structure and its contemporary addition.

A key challenge was to introduce a modern living space to a Grade II listed farmhouse without diminishing its historic character. Our solution was a bold glass-and-copper extension that forms a clear architectural contrast, rather than imitating the past. This approach respects the integrity of the original building while providing the light-filled, open-plan space designed for modern family life. The copper cladding will patina over time and the design remains deferential to the farmhouse’s original scale, ensuring the new element sits in balance with the old.

To ensure the home felt entirely cohesive, our design is underpinned by a strong sense of material continuity. The craftsmanship of the original stone elevations is echoed through refined interior finishes and extends directly into the landscape, where the same stone is used to shape the new terraces and garden paving. This considered use of material forges a powerful and intuitive link between the architecture, interiors, and garden.

Country farmhouse.

The interiors of this Grade II Listed farmhouse were sympathetically reimagined to create a bright and open series of family living spaces. Stripping away the scars of the unsuccessful 1970s additions, we added a bold twenty-first-century chapter that reflects the building’s integrity, while capturing its spirit in a modern form.

The design marries new contemporary elements while accentuating the existing materials, with exposed stonework and minimal glazing taking centre stage in the extended living room and kitchen.
