The Hide, Buckinghamshire

Industrial-Style Family Home

Set within the Green Belt and overlooking the rolling Chiltern Hills, this project reimagines a modest bungalow as a striking, contemporary family home. The Hide is conceived as a warm, industrial-influenced retreat, crafted to immerse its occupants in natural light and far-reaching countryside views. Thoughtfully positioned on the site, the house is approached via a bridge that leads into a dramatic double-height living space, where the landscape unfolds through expansive glazing.

The design brings together the distinct character of the Chilterns with a refined, modern sensibility. Chiltern red brick and black timber cladding root the architecture in its local setting, while Crittall-style windows and Corten accents introduce a subtle industrial edge. The result is a home that feels both grounded and forward-looking, shaped by a desire for openness, flexibility and connection to nature.

The Hide is a National Finalist and Regional Winner of Best Individual New Home from LABC, a Finalist for House of the Year at the British Homes Awards 2022, recipient of the Berkhamsted Citizens’Environment Award, and winner of BUILD’s Best Replacement Dwelling, South East Award. Countryside Industrial Living

This new-build replacement dwelling is shaped around its expansive valley views, with large openings that bring the surrounding landscape into the heart of the home. The interiors balance modern lines with a subtle industrial influence, using exposed brickwork and a restrained material palette to give the spaces clarity and character.

Reclaimed elements are integrated throughout. In the master bedroom, timber panelling introduces texture and depth, while in the main living areas a solid timber dining table, bespoke kitchen joinery and exposed roof beams establish a cohesive and honest materiality. The result is a series of well-crafted spaces that feel grounded, contemporary and closely connected to their rural setting.
