The Old Barn, Buckinghamshire

A Rural Barn Reimagined

Set within the Buckinghamshire hills, this 1880s barn originally functioned as a threshing barn alongside a Victorian milking parlour, before later use as stabling. The project brings together the barn, piggery and stables to create a five-bedroom family home, extending the life of a well-preserved group of 19th-century agricultural buildings. While not listed, the design retains key historic elements, ensuring the new home responds appropriately to its rural context and local vernacular.

The proposed layout is organised around a generous open-plan kitchen, dining and living space, supported by a snug and library for more contained family use. Two bedrooms are accommodated within the former stables, providing flexibility for family living, guests or independent accommodation.

Sustainability underpins the scheme. The existing structures will be upgraded with a fully insulated external envelope, an air source heat pump and the reuse of original materials where viable. The landscape strategy introduces native planting to improve biodiversity, alongside a small orchard.

Internally, the scheme is restrained and purposeful. A limited material palette, bespoke joinery and carefully selected furnishings create a calm, practical interior that reflects the rural setting while supporting modern family life.
