Transformation of 1980s Family Home.
For this project we transformed a large, 1980s house that was built in an enviable location in Marlow, but was rather dated and brutal in its design, with red brick and a quirky material palette. The house didn’t make the most of its location or the light around it. It was set in beautiful countryside, surrounded by fields and horses, but the house had no views and was dark and gloomy.
What was the client’s brief?
The home is owned by a couple entering retirement, and their brief was to create a relaxed living space to suit the next phase of their lives. They wanted to enjoy a forever home, and build the space they had always dreamed of. Specifically they asked us to add more light, allow views to the gardens and generally bring it into the 21st century.
What did we do?
We decided to fix the house’s awkward layout with a complete property facelift. We added a new swimming pool, and gave the first floor bedroom an elevated, cantilevered extension that looks like you could almost jump into the pool from it, and makes the most of the beautiful views across the fields.
We showed a great deal of respect for the materials used; timber cladding was used to cover up the rather severe red brick, and contemporary glazing softened the house’s look.
What was the finished result?
As well as the complete facelift and stunning first floor extension, we reworked the internal layout, using minimal framed glazing to add light and increase the feeling of space. The result is an enviable contemporary family home that is almost unrecognisable from the brutalist property it once was.
