Contemporary Extension to Grade II Listed Georgian House

The client approached us after purchasing a substantial Grade II Listed Georgian house perfectly located in the vicinity of the scenic Bowlhead Green. The family of 5 wanted to create a forever home by faithfully restoring the existing house whilst creating a contemporary feel through a modern extension.

What did we do?

From our first visit to the property, we fell in love with the character house and lush countryside surrounding it. As part of the HG Way, we began by carrying out a feasibility study to demonstrate how a contemporary glazed extension along with intelligent soft landscaping would make the most of the views across the stunning property. The extension would be built on stilts, giving it a floating feel making it look light and subordinate to the existing listed house.

What challenges are we facing?

As the existing house is listed, we work closely with the planning and conservation teams to gain approval.

What was our design?

To achieve a natural connection between the stately Georgian home and the polished contemporary extension, we focused on how our clients would experience their home through the modern interventions we’ve proposed. On the ground floor, we knitted together the journey through the home, by creating clearly defined zones within the property: a private intimate space in the main house, a space for entertaining friends and family within the new extension as well as an area for relaxing outside in the long summer evenings.

We demonstrated how the house and the surrounding gardens will be experienced in their totality, in different ways and at different times of the day. As the site has different levels and different functions, our aim is to connect the North and South gardens by means of an extension to the west. The kitchen and the extension would become the heart of the home and the centre of the site.

Throughout the design process, we’ve put ourselves in our client’s shoes and pictured leaving the house in the morning through the kitchen with an aromatic cup of coffee, through the indoor/outdoor extension, a tranquil space before getting into the car to get to a busy day. Our client’s daily first and last impression of their home would be the view overlooking their property and the rolling countryside below.
